What is Imposter Syndrome?
Ever feel like you do not deserve an award, or that the work you put out is not good enough. Do you believe that luck is the reason for success? Or that your success was only because you received help? The belittlement of yourself. That is Imposter Syndrome.
Why Identify Imposter Syndrome?
Imposter syndrome can be a debilitating experience, making it difficult to embrace success and reach your full potential. There are some common challenges that come with Imposter Syndrome and exploring the common signs and symptoms can give us a better understanding of how to overcome it.
Do any of these apply to you?
* Self-doubt:
- Do you constantly question your abilities and skills, even when your accomplishments are proof of your abilities?
* Fear of failure:
- Are you persistently worrying about making mistakes or being exposed as a fraud?
* Perfectionism:
- Do you find yourself setting unrealistically high standards for yourself and feel dissatisfied with your work?
* Attributing success to external factors:
- Do you believe that your achievements are due to luck, connections, or other people’s mistakes rather than your own abilities?
* Undermining your accomplishments:
- Do you dismiss your successes as insignificant or not deserving of recognition?
* Comparing yourself to others:
- Do you often fell inadequate when comparing yourself to others, especially those who seem more successful?
* Difficulty accepting compliments:
- Do you feel uncomfortable or are in disbelief when praised for your work?
* Procrastination:
- Do you avoid tasks due to fear of failure or fear of not meeting your own high expectations?
* Physical symptoms:
- Do you experience anxiety, stress, or burnout when you see success?
If you answered yes to any of these questions then you feel that you are an Imposter and do not deserve any of the success you have accomplished. You are afraid of changing jobs because you feel your skills won’t be good enough. You are afraid of challenges because you are afraid of failing or letting those around you down. So what do you do? You sit around, moan and groan because you hate your job, you hate your career, but are frozen in fear. Fear that you won’t make it anywhere else. That this is all you can do.

5. Practice self care
- Get enough sleep and nutrition
- Do things you enjoy as a reward for your hard work, and accomplishments
Conclusion
Imposter syndrome can be debilitating when you want to move up or out of a position. You feel like you won’t make it anywhere else. However, everyone is good at something. Everyone has skills that can be transferred over to another position in one way or another. The most important thing is to allow yourself to grow. Take note of what you have done well. Think back to times when you have been complimented on a task you did. Ask friends and family for help. Ask them to describe you and tell you what they think your strengths are. Sometimes we just need to hear from others what we cannot see in ourselves.
